Using a disposable
santitary pad or tampon is
just as damaging to our
bodies and the earth, like
using disposable diapers on a
baby!
Please make an
important, environmentally
responsible choice for your
feminine hygiene products!
Women around the world
are increasingly aware of how
they can make a significant,
positive environmental impact
by switching from disposable
tampons and pads to items
that are washable and re-
usable! This simple change
is as significant and EASY as
switching from plastic to
canvas bags!
Women, on average,
experience a lifetime
menstruation span of 41
years (11-52). From use of
disposable feminine hygiene,
an estimated 12 billion
sanitary pads and 7 billion
tampons are dropped into the
U.S. environment (U.S. 1998)
each year.
These products are a
modern, viable alternative to
disposable tampons and
pads.
Additionally, tampons and
pads contain surfactants,
adhesives, additives and
dioxin. Dioxin, a known
carcinogen, is a by-product of
the bleaching process of
rayon tampons. In landfills,
these substances can leach
into the environment
(groundwater, streams and
lakes) causing serious
pollution and health
concerns.
Every year, billions of
plastic laden pads and liners
are disposed of by women.
Most of these pads are made
from over 90% crude oil
plastic which goes on to
pollute global environments
forever. Generally the plastic
waste ends up in landfill sites
and the oceans of the world
forever causing visual
pollution and damaging
marine life and ultimately the
food chain. By choosing
reusable menstural items you
are saying no to crude oil
plastics.
Although not all women
can afford to purchase an
energy-efficient hybrid car or
convert their home to solar
energy, they can reduce
dangerous landfill waste by
choosing to use reusable
menstrual items. |
